Artist Residency Award

Humboldt Field Research Institute - Eagle Hill Foundation

I've recently been awarded an Artist Residency for August, 2008, at the Humboldt Field Research Institute in Steuben, Maine. Located near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, the facilities occupy the densely forested summit of Eagle Hill, the highest part of Dyer Point, one of a number of peninsulas along the Downeast Maine coast.

The Humboldt Field Research Institute provides advanced and professional-level field seminars in natural history by recognized regional, national, and international experts. The Institute actively promotes collaboration in natural history education, research, and publishing. Its mission is international in scope, working together with scientists from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Latin America. The Institute sponsors natural history expeditions to Latin America, especially Venezuela, the first country visited by Alexander von Humboldt in 1799 at the beginning of his 5-year expedition to Latin America. The Institute publishes the Maine Naturalist, a quarterly peer-reviewed natural history science journal.

The focus of the Eagle Hill Foundation is the interdisciplinary aspects of the study of nature and natural history. The Foundation’s programs include residencies and retreats for artists and art historians, the Panorama public lecture series, and Cosmos research seminars focusing on literary sources. The Institute and Eagle Hill Foundation collaborate on the Journal of the North Atlantic, focusing on the peoples of the North Atlantic, their expansion into the region over time, and their interactions with their changing environment.
