This charcoal drawing is a successful statement of my current philosophy and aesthetic. It effectively transcends the visible form of the subject – it is not actually a bird (it is carbon applied to plant fibers) and it is not a reflection of the appearance of a bird. Using burned wood and paper, I have fashioned a distinct object inspired by my encounter with this creature we name ‘bird’, the essence of which is beyond articulation. Mere depictions confine the subject, the artist and the viewer to a small world, reflecting an exterior phenomenon, defined by the senses and the mind. Art, by contrast, reveals a boundless realm by guiding attention inward, through an object (or sounds), beyond the senses and the mind, and into great mystery. This purpose is worthy of the commitment and sacrifices required to create Art that is meaningful to others now and across time and space. |
